The NITI Aayog Wednesday released a preliminary or baseline ranking for the 101 most backward districts of India that have signed up for the Narendra Modi government’s ‘Transformation of Aspirational Districts’ programme. The rankings are based on 49 indicators and 81 data points monitored in real time using a dashboard created in partnership with the Andhra Pradesh government, which will also be used for data collection Haryana’s Mewat is the lowest-ranked among these backwards districts, while Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram is the best-performing district of the 101. Mewat is preceded by Madhya Pradesh’s Singrauli and Telangana’s Asifabad at the bottom of the list, while Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon and Maharashtra’s Osmanabad lie second and third on the top of the table.

Recently NITI Aayog suggested the possibility of exploring coal reserves in the state and using them as a source of income by producing:
NITI Aayog explained that ethanol can be produced from coal reserves available at Chintalapudi, Nuzividu areas in the state, which can then be directly supplied to thermal power plants, thus facilitating the production of electric power at a lower cost. Further NITI Aayog noted that using ethanol to produce electricity can prevent air pollution to a large extent. Moreover, Ethanol can be used to eradicate rats and other pests that adversely affect crops, thereby helping increase crop yield. He also suggested that the state government could take assistance from Israel, where advanced technology for producing ethanol from coal is available.
